One of the biggest disappointments from a week ago surrounding the Clemson football team was the secondary. The Tigers need a couple of guys to step up.

Everyone can pretty much agree that the Clemson football secondary had very little bright spots Saturday evening when the Tigers took on the Texas A&M Aggies.

A week later, and Clemson needs to start seeing that defensive backfield learn from their mistakes and get better as a whole.

It’s not just one guy, but the entire unit.

Several times throughout the game against the Aggies, we saw guys in position to make a play and they just didn’t. Instead, they let a ball go through their grasps or right over their head. It just happened too many times.

While it’s true that the entire unit needs work, Clemson football needs production from two specific guys in the future: Mark Fields and AJ Terrell.

Both Fields and Terrell will see plenty of time at that cornerback position opposite of Trayvon Mullen. After going back and watching the film, it’s clear to see that the Tigers need more production from that cornerback spot.

Both of those guys, Fields and Terrell, have the ability to be NFL-caliber defensive backs, but we haven’t seen that so far.

Fields hasn’t been able to take charge or command of that position despite being a veteran leader and it seems that Terrell is still growing into the role as a true-sophomore.

Either way, the Tigers need those guys to step up. For Clemson football’s defense to be the best that it can be, it needs a solid secondary. They don’t have to be elite.

They don’t have to force two interceptions a game. But, they can’t be giving up chunk plays and playing soft in coverage, allowing a quarterback to beat them through the air the way in which Kellen Mond did.

It’s going to be important going forward that both of those guys get better and truly prove why they were 5-stars coming out of High School.
