Clemson Football: Trevion Thompson could make impact at slot WR

ATLANTA, GA - SEPTEMBER 22: Trevion Thompson

Clemson football wide receiver Trevion Thompson could make an impact for the Tigers on offense this year as he transitions to a different position.

The Clemson football coaching staff shared with us the beginning depth chart for the 2018 season Monday morning.

One of the interesting, but least noticed changes to the depth chart had to do with wide receiver Trevion Thompson.

Thompson, who had been listed as a backup at boundary receiver for a couple of seasons, had been moved to slot and is now the second-string slot receiver behind Hunter Renfrow.

Thompson is a very talented wide receiver that hasn’t had a lot of opportunities to get on the field.

Could he make an impact?

Even though Thompson was listed as a “co-starter” when the summer depth chart was released months ago, we all knew who the starter was really going to be.

After the emergence of Justyn Ross in fall camp and the fact that Diondre Overton is still on the roster, it seemed that Thompson could end up being lost in the fold yet another season.

But, the coaches made the decision to move to the slot- one of the wide receiver positions that had just TJ Chase and Will Swinney listed on the depth chart behind Hunter Renfrow back in the summer.

This is a huge move for the Tigers.

Thompson has become a physically mature athlete and will be a force to be reckoned with out of that slot position when he rotates into the game.

He has the ability to be a lead-blocker and make catches over the middle of the field. Thompson will be a nightmare to many linebackers, who will be a step or two slower than him, or a safety coming up in coverage that he is much taller than.

I’m really interested to see how Thompson performs out of the slot and believe this move could be one that proves to be very beneficial to that Clemson football offense in 2018.
