Clemson football will open up the 2018 season with a game against the Furman Paladins. Here is our spread for the season-opening match up.

The Clemson football team will open up the 2018 season with a home game against the Furman Paladins.

Unfortunately, games between FBS and FCS opponents are not given Vegas Spreads, so we decided that we would give the game our own spread.

After looking at both opponents, taking into account where the game is being played and how we think it will play out, we came up with both a spread and an Over/Under. Here is the opening line for the Tigers’ game against Furman.

Clemson Football Odds:

Spread: Clemson -42.5

Over/Under: 60.5

Early Thoughts:

It really depends what kind of game you think this is going to be. Do you think the Clemson football offense will have trouble scoring early? Will Furman find a way to put up a couple of scores in the second half when the Tigers are playing second, third and maybe even fourth-string guys?

42.5 points seems like a lot of points on a spread, but if you believe the final score is going to be something like Clemson 54, Furman 10, that’s almost right on the number. I don’t think the Paladins will be able to stop Clemson from scoring, but I’m not sure what the second half will look like.

That’s one of the reasons oddsmakers tend to stay away from games like this. When you look at spreads and over/unders, they’re just too unpredictable because of the fact that the better team will look to start subbing guys out early and often.

Many that would take Furman +42.5 would be the same people that would tell you that it would be disappointing for Clemson to only win a game 35-7 against the Paladins or something of that magnitude.

In the end, I think the spread is fair, especially considering that the game is in Death Valley and that the team will be looking to prove that they are more than capable of scoring the ball in the first game of the season.
