Clemson Football Recruiting: 4-star DB picks Tigers over Bama, Oklahoma
2019 Clemson football recruiting target Jalyn Phillips announced a commitment to the Tigers Monday as part of his birthday celebration.
The 2019 Clemson football recruiting class picked up another talented commitment Monday when 4-star safety Jalyn Phillips announced his decision via Twitter.
Phillips, a very talented defensive back out of Lawrenceville, Georgia, picked the Tigers over Alabama and Oklahoma.
He had offers from basically all of the major College Football programs in the nation, and for good reason.
Phillips became the 23rd commitment of the 2019 Clemson football recruiting class. The Tigers are currently ranked as the No. 5 class in the nation.
Analysis:
When watching Phillips’ film, the one thing I really like is his recognition. His eye discipline is something that most high school safeties just don’t possess.
He is able to have his eyes in the backfield and discern a run from a pass. He has that instinct and quick step to get back in position on a pass play or come up and put an end to a run. That’s exactly what you like to see from a safety.
Phillips is athletic and he has the ability to pick up some tough assignments and still make plays. He is a prototypical size to play safety at the division 1 level. Coming in at 6-0 and 190 pounds, he could stand to put on about 10 pounds, but other than that, he looks really good playing the position.
It will be interesting to see how he progresses over his senior season and how much he will be able to contribute as a freshman. This is a really good pickup for the Clemson coaching staff, which is putting the final touches on the 2019 cycle.
The Tigers officially have two more spots in the class, but we know that they will take a few more than that with early enrollees coming into play. I’d expect that we see a total close to 30 for the class, so it will be intriguing to see who gets these final 5-8 spots for the Tigers.
