The Clemson football program is looking for offensive line talent in the state of Ohio once again. The Tigers are currently surging for 3-star guard, Zach Carpenter.

Pulling major division one talent out of Ohio State’s backyard has never been an easy feat, especially for a school as south as Clemson. Since Urban Meyer took over in Columbus, it’s been nearly impossible.

In a show of their recruiting prowess, Dabo Swinney and company went into Meyer’s backyard and landed 5-star tackle, Jackson Carman, this past recruiting cycle. As the No. 17 prospect in the country and the No. 1 overall prospect in Ohio, Carman was considered Ohio State’s to lose and lose they did.

Just a few months removed from Carman’s surprise commitment to Clemson and the Tigers are making noise in enemy territory once again.

Zach Carpenter

At 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, Carpenter has outstanding size for a guard on the high school level. His wide lower half and exceptional length make him a force when he gets his hands on a defender.

Playing for Archbishop Moeller high school, Carpenter has experience operating in a spread offense. On film, he shows his ability to work to the second level and create favorable blocking angles against more agile linebackers and safeties. He is patient in setting up his blocks which helps him engage within the framework of his body and stop from holding.

Carpenter lacks quickness, which could present problems if trying to pull him or set up a screen in space. Other than that one weakness, he is a solid prospect for Clemson.

The Tigers currently hold all nine crystal ball predictions for the Ohio native. It appears Clemson may be on the brink of landing their second Ohio prospect in a matter of months.

With the Tigers’ current depth along the offensive line, Carpenter would be able to come in and develop behind more experienced players. This would be of benefit to both him and Clemson as he will fortify his body in the weight room and gain immeasurable knowledge from offensive line coach, Robbie Caldwell.
