Clemson Football: Tigers will rely heavily on Trayvon Mullen in 2018
The Clemson football defense will rely heavily on cornerback Trayvon Mullen in 2018. Mullen will be the glue to an inexperienced secondary for the Tigers.
Trayvon Mullen had two interceptions in Clemson football’s spring game Saturday and looked head-and-shoulders better than the other defensive backs.
While he still has work to do, Mullen has the talent and skill to be an All-ACC caliber player and maybe even more.
This year, one thing’s clear: Clemson football’s defense will rely heavily on Trayvon Mullen.
A Mackensie Alexander role:
During his junior year with Clemson football, Mackensie Alexander picked the opponent’s best receiver and took him out of their offense.
He did it week-after-week.
No matter who it was, Alexander made sure to lockdown and provide perfect one-on-one coverage. That freed up the safeties and linebackers to have a little bit of “wiggle room” in their coverage.
This year, Trayvon Mullen will need to become a player like Mackensie Alexander.
Unfortunately, Mark Fields hasn’t lived up to his potential thus far. AJ Terrell is very talented, but inexperienced.
There are several other guys that will be getting broke in during the season.
That means Clemson will rely on Trayvon Mullen to be a staple in the secondary. He needs to prove to be the guy that opposing offenses want to throw to the opposite field against.
If he can do that, it will make the secondary look a lot better.
Next: Trevor Lawrence is more than the real deal
Guys will play looser and you’ll see an added confidence to the rest of the team. Of course, it all starts up front. The defensive line is deep and very talented. They will take some of the pressure off of the secondary, but it will be up to Mullen to take on that leadership role and lockdown the “Tee Higgins” of the world that the Tigers will face, especially early in the season.
