Clemson football announced how they will split up the quarterbacks for the spring game. Here’s what that tells us heading into Saturday’s scrimmage.
The 2018 Clemson football spring game will be held on Saturday in Death Valley.
We are expecting a huge turnout for the game, which will be televised on ESPN. On Wednesday, the Tigers held their last practice of the spring before the glorified scrimmage.
Clemson football announced that the quarterbacks will be split up like so:
- Kelly Bryant, Chase Brice
- Hunter Johnson, Trevor Lawrence
Here’s what that tells us:
- Kelly Bryant is the starter.
This is an obvious one. We all know that Bryant will be the starter Week 1 when the Tigers take on Furman.
Bryant is a senior, returning after leading Clemson football to an ACC Championship and a College Football Playoff berth.
He will be the first-string guy for quite some time and that will not change. He is paired with the fourth-string guy Chase Brice, who will see time behind Bryant in the spring game.
- The coaches really want to see Lawrence vs. Johnson
The second and third-string guys are set at Trevor Lawrence and Hunter Johnson.
The coaches really want to see the battle between the two 5-stars.
I would assume that both of these guys will get an equal amount of series to lead their respective offenses. The coaches want to see how they perform- in front of crowd- against the same defensive and offensive personnel.
Right now, I would think that Hunter Johnson has the edge over Lawrence on the depth chart, but that could all change as we head out of the spring game and into fall camp in a few months.
Next: What's the toughest game on Clemson's schedule?
It will be interesting to see how these two guys perform and what they look like. I am intrigued to see how they lead the offense and how their downfield passing skills compete with that of Kelly Bryant’s on the opposite side.
