The opportunity for snaps at wide receiver is very limited for Clemson football. Could that lead junior Cornell Powell to flip to the defensive backfield?
Clemson football isn’t called #WRU for no reason.
The Tigers have produced some of the best wide receivers in the country over the past half-decade. DeAndre ‘Nuk’ Hopkins, Martavis Bryant, Charone Peake, and Sammy Watkins just to name a few.
That has led to Clemson receiving commitments from top prospects from all around the nation.
This year, Clemson football returns several 5-star guys that will fill roles, leaving the wide receiver spot with plenty of depth yet again.
Could that lead to a position switch for junior Cornell Powell?
Making a change…
Powell was a highly-touted prospect coming out of high school. Through two seasons, though, he hasn’t gotten much of a chance to make a statement.
He has sat behind the likes of Ray-Ray McCloud and Artavis Scott. This season, it looks that he will move into the second-string role behind Amari Rodgers, but true-freshman Derion Kendrick is right on his heels.
Could that lead to a switch for Powell?
Powell is too athletic to not have a spot on the field. He has great hands and is very physical body.
If he were to make a switch to corner back, it would provide much-needed depth at the position and, most likely, get him more playing time.
Unfortunately, making a switch to the opposite side of the ball is not easy. But, I think Powell has the athleticism and football IQ to become a solid corner back and play an important role on Clemson football’s defense.
Next: Will Clemson land a QB prospect in 2018?
If he decides to stay at wide receiver, I think we see more of him this year. But, a switch just may be what he needs to kick start an NFL career and make a major impact for the Tigers in 2018.
