The 2019 recruiting class is on the clock and Clemson football is already forming trends. The Tigers appear to be targeting taller wide outs in this recruiting cycle.
Clemson has earned the moniker, #WRU for the immense talent they produce at the position. From Adam Humphries to Mike Williams, the Tigers churn out talent in all different shapes and sizes.
I recently noticed a trend in the Tigers’ 2019 recruiting class as I will discuss below.
Tall WRs
There is no right or wrong way to recruit in the world of college football. What is important is that you recruit players that fit your preferred mold.
Clemson has had success with long receivers in the past. Most notably, Martavis Bryant and Mike Williams. They have also had success with guys like Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins as well.
It appears that Dabo Swinney and company are restocking on lanky receivers in the 2019 recruiting class.
The Tigers have currently offered 11 wide receiver prospects. 7 of those 11 prospects stand 6-foot-2, or taller. Even more eye opening, is that all 11 prospects stand at least 6-foot-1.
Why?
The Tigers are not in dire need of size at wide receiver. Diondre Overton, Tee Higgins and true freshman, Justyn Ross, all stand at least 6-foot-4.
So why recruit more receivers in the same mold?
For starters, Clemson’s current depth won’t be there in two to three years. Higgins and Ross both have the talent to be early departures for the NFL draft in the future. With a big year in 2018, Overton could find himself contemplating an early departure as well.
Secondly, the Tigers put a considerable amount of faith in their playmakers on the perimeter. These bigger receivers have a better chance at coming up with 50-50 balls in traffic.
Next: South Carolina lacking in blue-chip prospects in 2019 recruiting cycle
Dabo Swinney and his staff have already stockpiled talent at quarterback. Now, they are on the hunt for weapons for their elite signal callers.
