The Clemson basketball team has a chance at a double-bye in the ACC Tournament. Here’s how the Tigers lock up that No. 4 spot in the conference standings.

The Clemson basketball team improved to 21-7 overall and 10-6 in the ACC with a 75-67 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers and gave Clemson a chance at finishing strong in the ACC standings.

Clemson tied its program record with 10 conference wins.

ACC Standings:

  1. Virginia (15-1)
  2. Duke (12-4)
  3. UNC (11-5)
  4. Clemson (10-6)
  5. NC State (9-6)
  6. Miami (9-7)
  7. Virginia Tech (9-7)
  8. Louisville (9-7)
  9. Florida State (8-7)

This is the current snapshot of the ACC standings heading into what is the final week of the  regular season.

The Tigers are just one game back behind North Carolina for third place, but still have work to do to lock up a double-bye here before heading into the ACC Tournament.

How the Tigers lock up a top-4 seed:

Clemson basketball has two games remaining (vs. Florida State and @ Syracuse). To lock up a top-four seed, the Tigers have to win both of those. I guess there is a complicated scenario where a whole lot of teams lose that Clemson could still get a No. 4 seed, but it’s certainly not likely.

On the extreme other hand, If Clemson lost both, they could fall as far as No. 9 in the ACC.

Unfortunately, though, winning out isn’t the only thing that has to happen for Clemson to have a top-four seed.

NC State currently holds a tiebreaker over the Tigers. That means if the Wolfpack win out, (vs. FSU, @ Georgia Tech, vs. Louisville) they would garner the No. 4 seed.

Virginia Tech losing today to Louisville helped Clemson basketball as they now hold a one-game lead over them, Miami, and Louisville.

Bottom Line:

Win-out and pull against NC State. The Wolfpack play Florida State on Sunday. If the Seminoles could find a way to win in Raleigh, it would basically give Clemson a “win and you’re in scenario.”
