Today we continue our analysis of Clemson football’s roster in 2018. Let’s take a look at the wide receiver position for the Tigers.
Clemson football won’t play another real opponent until next September, but, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a look at their roster heading into next season.
The wide receiver position seemed underutilized in 2017.
It seemed that #WRU was starting to slip, but the Tigers added a couple of talented 5-star prospects in this recruiting class and now there’s a lot of optimism surrounding this group.
As a matter of fact, this group may be the deepest it has been ever in Clemson football history.
Here’s a look at the projected depth chart heading into the spring.
Pre-Spring Projected Depth Chart:
Boundary (X) Starter: Tee Higgins
- Diondre Overton
Slot (Y) Starter: Hunter Renfrow
- Trevion Thompson
- TJ Chase
Field (Z) Starter: Amari Rodgers
- Cornell Powell
- Derion Kendrick
Wide Receivers Coach: Jeff Scott
2018 Position Outlook:
This position is three-deep at every single spot. The Tigers will have two new starters stepping in at the boundary and field positions.
We expect Tee Higgins and Amari Rodgers, both true-sophomores, to fill those roles.
I know one thing you’re asking when you look at the depth chart is where Justyn Ross fits in. Right now, he’s not on the pre-spring depth chart because he’s not on campus. Ross, the 5-star out of Alabama, won’t be with the Clemson football team until the summer.
When he steps on campus, he will fill in the boundary role behind Tee Higgins and Diondre Overton. I think Ross could move into the two-deep at some point during the season, as well.
Next: Tigers will have absurd amount of talent at WR
Overton will have his shot during the spring to impress the coaches and prove that he deserves a shot. It will be interesting to see the competition between all these guys and I don’t think Clemson football can go wrong with whoever they decide to put out on the field in these three spots.
