Clemson football enters week 10 with the Atlantic Division title in reach. Standing in their way is the NC State Wolfpack, lead by Dave Doeren.
The Tigers matchup with NC State lost some of its luster after seeing the Wolfpack get dismantled by Notre Dame last week. NC State remains atop the Atlantic Division at the moment, however, Clemson should be the clear-cut favorite coming into this contest.
Not only does this game hold ACC Championship implications, it holds College Football Playoff implications as well. The first edition of the 2017 playoff rankings will be released on October 31st. As of right now, Clemson has done enough to secure a playoff spot, but, they cannot afford another loss.
NC State’s home atmosphere may factor into this showdown. Clemson currently sits as seven-point favorites over the Wolfpack, according to SportsBookReview.com.
Thoughts
When you take a hard look at NC State this season, they are a good, but, not good enough to threaten Clemson. Their best win came against a Louisville team that essientially has Lamar Jackson and that’s about it. And we can write off their “statement” win over Florida State as a narrow victory over a below-average conference foe.
The Wolfpack are good enough to win eight or nine games this season, however, they are not on a level to compete with championship contenders.
NC State gave up 308 yards on the ground against Notre Dame. This bodes well for Clemson as their offense literally runs through their rushing attack. The Tigers have an explosive pair of running backs in Tavien Feaster and Travis Etienne. Should Kelly Bryant’s health continue to improve, he figures to be a major factor on the ground as well.
Despite the Wolfpack’s talent on the offensive side of the ball, I don’t expect them to cross the 20-point threshold against Clemson. The Tigers rank 7th in the country in total defense and 6th in scoring defense, allowing just just over 13 points per game. Clemson’s elite talent and team speed will make it difficult for NC State to move the football.

As of right now, I believe Clemson will cover the seven point spread. NC State is a respectable opponent, but, the Tigers’ have beaten better teams by more than one touchdown, i.e. Virginia Tech.
