Clemson Football: Kelly Bryant Injury Update, What if he can’t go?
Clemson football updated the status of Kelly Bryant after Wednesday’s practice. Bryant was held out of practice as he recuperates from a concussion.
Clemson football quarterback Kelly Bryant was held out of practice Wednesday as he recuperates from a concussion and sprained ankle.
Bryant tried to go on Friday vs. Syracuse and it was clear he was not mobile enough to play.
Because of that immobility, Bryant was pounded by the Orange defense and suffered a concussion.
Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football staff have begun the process of self-scouting and getting the Tigers better this bye week.
Part of that, obviously, is getting guys healthy.
On Wednesday, Swinney said he wanted to work with a lot of the two and three deep guys. I think they used that as an opportunity to keep Kelly Bryant out.
From what we can gather, Bryant didn’t go to class on Wednesday as well. Most likely, he is recuperating from the concussion-like symptoms and going through protocol to get back on the field.
In my opinion, I’d expect him to return to the field sometime late this week and prepare to play against Georgia Tech.
But, you can never be so sure. Both of Bryant’s injuries (sprained ankle and concussion) take time to heal. A banged up ankle doesn’t have an exact amount of time before it’s better. It depends on the individual circumstances.
The same can be said about a concussion.
Swinney said that Kelly Bryant has responded well to treatment and, in all likelihood, that means Bryant will be back for Georgia Tech.
What if he can’t go?
Swinney also made it clear on Wednesday night that the pecking order is 1) Bryant, 2) Zerrick Cooper, 3) Hunter Johnson, 4) Tucker Israel.
I believe that if Kelly Bryant truly couldn’t go on Saturday that you would see both Cooper and Johnson, but Cooper will get the entire first quarter at the very least.

Hopefully, Kelly Bryant will be back as soon as he is 100% healthy. We will continue to update you on this and much more here on Rubbing the Rock. And don’t worry, we’ll all get through this bye week together!
