Clemson Football: Scouting report vs. Syracuse
Clemson football has injury concerns at quarterback entering their matchup with Syracuse. Will Dabo Swinney elect to play Kelly Bryant in the Tigers’ last contest before the bye week, or rest him on the sidelines?
When? Friday, October 13, 2017, 7:00 pm ET
Where? Carrier Dome, Syracuse, New York
2016 Record: 4-8 (2-6 ACC)
Head Coach: Dino Babers (2nd year)
Betting line: -21 Clemson
Returning starters: 20 total, 9 offensive, 11 defensive
Dino Babers has done just about all he could since taking over at Syracuse. When he arrived in 2016 the Orange hadn’t won more than four games in a season since 2013. While he led the ‘Cuse to just four wins a season ago, there is hope surrounding the program.
Syracuse is off to a promising start in Babers’ second year under the helm. The Orange sit 3-3, however, their three losses have come by an average of eight points. If you look closely enough, there is real progress being made at Syracuse.
Thoughts
The ‘Cuse are improved coming into this matchup with Clemson, but, not improved enough to come away with a victory.
The Tigers have one of the most talented rosters in the country, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Just one of Clemson’s first six opponents crossed the 20 point threshold this season.
Under the leadership of junior quarterback, Eric Dungey, this Syracuse offense throws the ball all over the yard, averaging 43 attempts per game. This lends well against the Tigers. With Clemson’s size along the front seven, throwing the ball is the ‘Cuse’s only hope at pulling off an upset. Still, I doubt Syracuse will score enough to threaten the Tigers.
It’ll be interesting to see how Clemson’s offense functions if Kelly Bryant cannot play. Syracuse has the most experienced defense in the nation, returning 11-of-11 starters. The Orange are led by a trio of senior linebackers — Parris Bennett, Zaire Franklin and Jonathan Thomas — who will look to slow the Tigers’ strong rushing attack.
Next: Dabo Swinney to chase history on Friday
This game could provide, Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson valuable playing time on the road should the Orange bottle up Clemson’s ground game.
