After sitting behind Alabama for the first four weeks of the season, Clemson football finally reclaimed their spot atop ESPN’s power rankings.
It took Clemson three victories over top-15 opponents to unseat Alabama as the most powerful team in college football. While the Tide have been impressive this season, there is no questioning the Tigers’ body of work at the moment.
In all likelihood this won’t be the last time Clemson and Alabama swap spots. The back-half of the Tide’s schedule is much more difficult than the Tigers’. Alabama will have more opportunities for statement wins.
Other Notable Rankings
Ohio State – No. 9
Despite having one loss, Ohio State still finds themselves at No. 9, ahead of undefeated Washington State. While the Buckeyes have one of the most talented rosters in the country, Washington State has a more impressive resume at the moment. The Cougars are coming off of a tough victory over No. 5 USC, while Ohio State lost their only contest versus a ranked opponent (Oklahoma – No. 5 at the time).
UCF – No. 19
UCF went from unranked last week, to No. 19. Scott Frost has the Knights clicking on all cylinders following a blowout victory over Memphis. UCF also dealt a gritty Maryland squad a 38-10 butt-whooping on the road in week four. Frost is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in the country, due for a power five head coaching opportunity in the near future.
Michigan – No. 7
Michigan is a good football team, but, not worthy of being ranked ahead of TCU. The Wolverines have one of the top defenses in the country, however, their offense is average at best. TCU, on the other hand, has an explosive spread attack to go along with their pesky defense. Most importantly, Michigan’s best win is Florida, while the Horned Frogs took down an explosive Oklahoma State team on the road.
Next: Tigers open as 3-score favorite over Wake Forest
Aside from a few details here and there, ESPN’s power rankings are fair. At the moment there is a considerable gap between Alabama and Clemson and the rest of the country. The Tigers and Tide appear to be the only two programs jockeying for the No. 1 spot.
