Which Clemson football rookies will survive NFL cuts today?
With the NFL 53-man roster deadline at 4 p.m. today. Which Clemson football rookies will make a roster or be placed on the practice squad?
Los Angeles Chargers receiver Mike Williams, the seventh overall selection, and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, the No. 12 overall pick can rest easy knowing that they won’t get cut today. But their former teammates have no guarantees.
Cordrea Tankersley. Tankersley was selected in the third round and appears to be making a case for backup snaps for the Miami Dolphins.
Wayne Gallman. The fourth round pick has played well and led the New York Giants in rushing two of four preseason games. Gallman’s only flaw has been fumbles. He has been punished in camp because of them, and he fumbled late in the 10-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Carlos Watkins. Watkins is another fourth rounder that has done enough to make the team. He is projected to be a backup or third team nose tackle behind starter and former Clemson Tiger, D.J. Reader.
Jordan Leggett. The fifth round pick for the New York Jets missed Saturday’s game with a foot injury but returned to action on Thursday and had two receptions for 18 yards. He did appear to be uncomfortable after his second reception and didn’t return to the game. With the limited depth at tight end, a healthy Leggett is on the team.
Linebacker Ben Boulware and receiver Artavis Scott were both undrafted free agents, respectively for the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Chargers. Their chances of making the final rosters are considered doubtful. Neither has gotten a lot of snaps and therefore their teams nor other teams have much game footage on them.
The Panthers cut down to 77 players yesterday and Boulware made the cut. Unfortunately, Boulware was unable to make the 53-man roster, being cut this morning. The Chargers haven’t made any cuts yet, so Scott will find out his status with the team later today. Scott didn’t catch a pass all preseason, but he did well on special teams. Former Clemson receiver Jaron Brown started his career with the Arizona Cardinals on the special teams and is currently a backup in his fifth season, so anything can happen for Scott.
Any players cut today can later be signed off waivers to practice squads or by other teams by noon on Sunday.
