With Clemson football set to open the 2017 season against Kent State tomorrow afternoon, Rubbing The Rock’s staff gives their score predictions.
This will be the first time that Clemson has squared off with Kent State in the history of the Tigers football program. The Golden Flashes have a storied history featuring alumni such as, Nick Saban and Lack Lambert, however, their current situation is not as pretty.
Kent State hasn’t been competitive over the past five years and to make matters worse they open up the 2017 season, on the road against the reigning National Champions. As you can see, the odds are clearly in Clemson’s favor in this one.
Here’s our staff’s thoughts on the game:
Andrew Boardwine: 62 – 10, Clemson
Tyreese Ingram: 56 – 0, Clemson
Anthony Messenger: 45 – 0, Clemson
Clemson was the unanimous selection among all of us. There is no reason to pick against the Tigers, they are a complete mismatch for the Golden Flashes.
In 2016, Kent State’s offense was lackluster at best. They were similar to Ohio State in their inability to threaten defenses vertically. We all saw what happened when the Tigers took on the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff. If you need a reminder, it ended in a 31-0 shutout for Clemson.
While Kent State certainly could have improved over the offseason, they return virtually the same offense. Quarterback Nate Holley, while he is an effective runner, simply doesn’t have enough ability as a passer to test Clemson down the field. Add in Clemson’s elite front seven and that spells trouble for the Golden Flashes.
On the offensive side of the ball, Clemson is looking to find their identity. Starting quarterback, Kelly Bryant is unproven, however, he has some intriguing physical tools. He has more than enough talent surrounding him to have success. Clemson has their most deep stable of running backs under Dabo Swinney, paired with their elite wide outs.

At the end of the day, Clemson’s talent and depth should be enough to get them past Kent State. That being said, it’s important that the Tigers take advantage of these in-game reps as they face a tough Auburn team in week two.
