Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney just signed a huge contract, ending the talks of him leaving for Alabama or Texas A&M in all likelihood.

Head Coach Dabo Swinney signed a huge contract with Clemson football today, extending his time in Tiger Town through 2024.

Swinney has compiled an 89-28 overall record during his time at Clemson and has led the Tigers to three ACC Championships, several key bowl wins, and a National Championship.

The stipulations within this contract also mean something very important for Clemson football fans: Swinney isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Here’s the details of the new contract, according to the Clemson Board of Trustees:

Dabo Swinney contract:

Eight years, 6.75 million average per year.

Swine will also get a 1.5 million signing bonus and, if he’s at Clemson on March 1, 2019, that will be an extra 1 million. 700,000 will be awarded on March 1, 2021.

The total of this contract, including all the bonuses comes out to a nice 54 million.

There are also incentives in Dabo Swinney’s contract:

ACC Atlantic Division Championship: $50,000

ACC Championship: $150,000

8+ wins and a non-CFB Playoff Bowl Game Appearance: $50,000

CFB Playoff NY6 Bowl Game Appearance: $100,000

CFB Playoff Semifinal Appearance: $200,000

National Championship Appearance: $200,000

More from Rubbing the Rock

National Championship: $250,000

He will also get $25,000 for winning ACC Coach of the Year or $50,000 for National Coach of the Year.

That’s a nice amount of money that Swinney could rack up over the next half decade. While the money is nice, the buyout is the key part of this contract.

Buyout:

Swinney buyout through 2018: $6 million

Through 2019: $4 million

Through 2020: $3 million

Through 2021: $2 million

For Dabo Swinney to leave Clemson, he’s going to have to pay the University millions of dollars. Now, I know that he has the money to do so if he wants to, but think about this:

This is Swinney sending a message to the nation.

He is saying that he is committed to Clemson football and believes in what they have built in the program. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon. The timing of this contract is also huge.

There have been so many speculations about Swinney leaving for Texas A&M or his alma mater Alabama when Nick Saban retires. This puts those rumors to bed. Will we have to revisit them later? Yes.

But, for now, The University is committed to Swinney and Swinney is committed to Clemson. I really believe we will see Dabo Swinney finish his career where the Blue Ridge yawns its’ greatness and I believe the Tigers, under his leadership, will hang a few more banners before it’s all said and done.
