NFL camps: Updates on Watson, Gallman, Leggett and Watkins
Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson has been given a lot of post-Clemson praise by his former head coach Dabo Swinney and some people have considered Swinney’s comments as being biased.
But Watson’s new coach seems to think highly of the talented quarterback too.
Yesterday, Texans head coach Bill O’Brien spoke to the media after practice, “Deshaun for a rookie is way ahead of any rookie quarterback that I have ever been around. It’s been fun.”
Wayne Gallman. The New York Giants have veteran running backs Shane Vereen and Shaun Draughn currently out with injuries, so Gallman has been getting a lot of work in camp.
Jordan Leggett. The New York Jets started camp on the July 29, and Leggett is hoping to at least get some backup snaps this upcoming season. The fifth round pick is competing with five other tight ends for playing time and is starting to get noticed in camp.
From the JetsInsider.com
"Yesterday I saw the first signs of life from Leggett and today I saw even more. Nothing crazy or spectacular, but he is starting to get open and make some catches. Seferian-Jenkins looks poised to have a really good year, I wouldn’t expect much out of Leggett this season but he’s starting to make some plays and there’s real potential with him down the road."
Carlos Watkins. Watkins is vying for the backup nose tackle job behind friend and former Clemson football teammate, D.J. Reader.
Even though the Texans have camp in Sulphur Springs, WV, Watkins and the other former Clemson players are getting a lot of support from Clemson fans who have been very prominent at Greenbrier. Watkins loves the support.
“Oh, yeah. That’s why I love Clemson. Fans travel everywhere. The best supporters ever. It’s good to see the purple and orange.”
Last week, Reader was called out by J.J. Watt, because he doesn’t believe in dinosaurs, so naturally Watkins was asked about his former college roommate’s beliefs.
“He has his theory. You know, I feel like he should be able to put that out there. But growing up I believed in dinosaurs. But you know, that’s his little thing. I can’t really argue with it.” Watkins said, “He believes in dragons but not dinosaurs. So you know, I feel like he got to explain that to the world out here.”
