Clemson football freshman quarterback Hunter Johnson is listed on the latest vegas odds for the 2017 Heisman Trophy race along with teammate Deon Cain.

Clemson football freshman quarterback Hunter Johnson is listed on the latest vegas odds for the 2017 Heisman Trophy race.

Johnson, a true-freshman who currently sits second on the Tigers’ depth chart, is listed as 100-1 odds to win the Heisman, according to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.

For some perspective, the favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy is USC’s Sam Darnold, who currently sits at 5-1 odds.

Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Lamar Jackson of Louisville come in at 10-1 while J.T. Barrett (Ohio State) and Deondre Francois (FSU) sit at 12-1 odds.

I still just find it interesting that Johnson is on this list. Teammate Deon Cain also is on the list at 100-1 odds.

It makes you wonder what Vegas may know or what they are seeing that they would list Johnson, a second-string quarterback according to depth charts, ahead of a guy like Kelly Bryant.

Johnson definitely has the attributes to be a Heisman candidate one day in his career.

He is a pure quarterback. He has the ability to throw the ball deep and accurately, but can also pull the ball down and run when called upon.

Johnson is also a great field general. The main question for him this season will be can he learn the offense in time to truly make an impact on the field.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Tigers implement a two quarterback system, at least in the first couple of games of the season, but then I expect the coaches to make a decision and stick with one guy, whether that be Johnson, Kelly Bryant, or even Zerrick Cooper.

Next: Is the 2017 QB battle a 1 year lease job?

Right now, it seems Hunter Johnson has a great chance to get some playing time and prove his ability as a freshman, but I wouldn’t go out and bet the house on the Heisman just yet.
