B.J. Goodson’s NFL career did not get off to a blistering start, rather, he barely played at all as a rookie. The NFL game is much different than college. Offenses are more complex and linebackers are required to do much more in coverage.

Coming into his second year in the NFL, Goodson appears to have turned the corner. The Giants parted ways with Kelvin Shepard this offseason, opening the door to Goodson, who has performed well through OTAs.

Giants linebackers coach, Bill McGovern told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan the following of Goodson.

"For B.J., in particular, he is doing a great job in terms of preparing the night before, being ready when he comes in the morning, but there is no substitution for reps."

It is clear that McGovern is intrigued by Goodson’s improvement thus far, however, there is a hint of caution in his words. The Giants understand that OTAs are important, but what really matters is how you perform when the pads come on.

Goodson has the physical tools to be an exceptional run-stopping linebacker in the NFL. That being said, he will struggle in pass coverage as a result of his tight hips and lackluster agility. It is vital that Goodson improve in coverage if he has any hopes of remaining the starter in the middle of the Giants defense for years to come.
