5. Is Henry all that impressive?

There’s no doubt in my mind that Derrick Henry is an elite player. He is a very good running back and is extremely talented. The question is: Is he all that impressive?

He leads the nation in rushing with 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns, but he has an average of 5.9 yards per carry. I’m not saying he’s not good, but ESPN is making him “the clear front runner for the Heisman,” where, in fact, he hasn’t looked like a Heisman front-runner against defenses with a pulse.

Against Florida, for example, he had to carry the ball 44 times for 189 yards rushing and a touchdown. Of course I have great respect that he can carry the ball 40+ times a game, but don’t act like that 189 yards isn’t skewed a bit by the fact he rushed the ball so many times. To be honest, if he had carried the ball a normal amount of times, say 25, he may not have even crossed the century mark against the Gators.

Again, I’m not saying he isn’t an impressive running back, but if you listen to the talking heads, they act as if no one could possibly be the Heisman besides him and that’s just not the case.
