10. Final Big Thursday (October 22, 1959)

For those of you that don’t know about the Clemson vs South Carolina rivalry, the game used to be played annually on Thursday. For 64 years, it was always held in Columbia and each year the state would basically shut down when Big Thursday came around and everyone would go watch or listen to the game.

As a matter of fact, the South Carolina Governor would sit on one team’s side for the first half and then would switch to the other team’s side for the second half. It was a great event and was revered by the entire state each and every year, but there was one problem.

Every single season, the game was held in Columbia. The Tigers never got the chance to play a home game and, finally, in 1959 it was announced that the final Big Thursday would be held and that Clemson would host the next season. The Tigers beat the Gamecocks by a score of 27-0 in the final Big Thursday match-up of all-time.

This marked the end of a tradition, but Clemson left their mark by picking up a victory in Columbia in the very last traditional Big Thursday match-up.
