Clemson Recruiting: Tigers Could Pick Up a Couple Big 2016 Commitments on National Signing Day

The 2016 Clemson football recruiting class could add a couple more pieces on National Signing Day, including five-star RB Tavien Feaster.

Recent years have conditioned Clemson football fans to expect early commitments on National Signing Day, and it doesn’t look like they will be disappointed this year.

Last year, it was Mitch Hyatt, the five-star offensive tackle who enrolled at Clemson in January. Before that, Deshaun Watson committed on Signing Day in 2012.

This Signing Day, it looks like Clemson could actually land multiple early commitments.

The big one would be five-star RB Tavien Feaster. Feaster is the top player in the state of South Carolina, the No. 13 prospect in the nation, and the No. 2 running back in the nation in 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

Feaster was in Clemson this weekend for Elite Junior Day and revealed Saturday night that he would announce his decision on Signing Day, according to 247 Sports.

All things considered, Feaster looks like a near-lock for Clemson. The timing seems to imply that he made up his mind while on campus and he might have even made his pledge already. After all, Clemson was in the lead for Feaster even before his trip this weekend.

"“Just the family feel,” Feaster told 247 about why he seemed to favor Clemson. “I love my mom, dad and grandparents. That’s a big thing to me. Coach Swinney is a great coach. He’s straight forward and honest.”"

Feaster’s other offers include Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida State, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Feaster isn’t the only recruit making his announcement on Signing Day though. His fellow Elite Junior Day attendee, Jamie Skalski, may also announce his commitment to join the 2016 Clemson football recruiting class on Wednesday, according to TigerNet.

Skalski is a three-star linebacker in the 247 Sports’ composite rankings. He has offers from Louisville, North Carolina, South Carolina, UCF, and a couple of others. He is expected to pick either Clemson or South Carolina and, from what I can tell, the Tigers look to be in pretty good shape.

Like Feaster, the timing of Skalski’s announcement seems to suggest that he will probably pick Clemson. He informed TigerNet of his impending announcement on Sunday, after Elite Junior Day.

Clemson also leads for a pair of 2016 wide receivers, in Diondre Overton and Cornell Powell. Neither has a scheduled announcement date yet there is a chance that they could pull the trigger on Wednesday anyway. Powell has indicated that me may commit early, hinting that it was possible that he would verbal to Clemson while on campus this weekend.

"“I talked it over with my head coach and I’ve got my mind made up,” Powell said, via SportsTalkSC.com. “It will be my mother’s first time coming down. If not this Saturday, then definitely soon. I just want my mother to see the campus.”"

Powell and Overton have also been speaking with WR Tavares Chase, who committed to Clemson this weekend.

"“We [Chase and Powell] all communicated about it,” Overton told TigerNet. “We talked a lot about the Wide Receiver U thing, so we’re all trying to come to a decision. I grew up with Cornell when I was in Greenville so I already knew him.”"

Even if neither receiver ends up committing to the Tigers on Signing Day, both look like they could eventually end up with Clemson. And, for the sake of Clemson fans’ heart-health, it might actually be better if they wait a little longer. With Feaster and Skalski already planning to make their announcements, Signing Day 2015 is already looking like another thrill-ride.
