Clemson Basketball: Brad Brownell should be on hot seat

If men’s basketball coach, Brad Brownell is not on the hot seat already, he should be. I understand that six of the Tigers losses in the ACC have come by a combined 15 points, but, Brownell has consistently lost tight games during his tenure at Clemson.

More from Clemson Basketball

Clemson has lost at least 10 games in each of Brad Brownell’s seven season’s as head coach. Even worse, the Tigers have only been to the NCAA tournament once under coach Brownell. That is not good by any standards. If the Tigers are content with being a below average team in the ACC than by all means keep coach Brownell, but, if Clemson is serious about being competitive they must start looking for replacements.

Recruiting

I cannot beat this drum enough, recruiting is the lifeblood of every collegiate program around the country regardless of the sport. Take the Clemson football team for instance, they began to recruit at a higher level under Dabo Swinney, which lead to more wins and eventually a National Championship.

Brad Brownell has yet to sign a top 25 recruiting class at Clemson. For some programs, i.e. Wichita State, Butler, signing a top rated class is not necessary to win. That being said those two programs still manage to sign impact players at the next level. Brownell has not been able to sign highly ranked individuals and on top of that the guys that he does sign are role players more or less. Clemson has done a poor job of identifying players that can impact the game.

Should Brad Brownell’s group close the season out poorly I think athletic director, Dan Radakovich needs to start thinking towards the future of this Clemson basketball program. Stayed tuned for our list of possible replacements.
