Why Jarrell Chandler’s Monday decision has Clemson fans holding their breath

The "Elite Retreat" wasn't enough.

Sometimes the recruiting trail feels like a rollercoaster, and this week, Clemson fans are feeling the drop. After more than a year of building a relationship and rolling out the orange carpet, four-star safety Davion Jones out of Hough, North Carolina, has shut the door on the Tigers.

On Tuesday, Jones—ranked as the No. 10 safety in the nation—announced a top five that did not include Clemson, instead listing Indiana, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and, yes, South Carolina. That’s a gut punch for Tiger Nation, losing out on one of the most dynamic playmakers in the Carolinas.

A Year of Courting Ends in a Snub

You have to feel for safeties coach Nolan Turner on this one. Clemson didn’t just toss an offer at Davion Jones—they built a real connection. Jones first visited campus back in March 2025, then earned his offer the hard way by showing out at Dabo Swinney’s camp last summer.

He was in Death Valley for the season opener against LSU, soaking in the atmosphere, and even came back for the Elite Retreat this March. With 120 tackles and 11 picks over the last three seasons, Jones looked like the perfect answer for a Tiger secondary that just lost a ton of talent to the draft.

The "Fantastic Four" Remaining Targets

Now that Jones is off the table, it’s crunch time for Clemson’s safety recruiting. The board is down to four main targets, and the Tigers absolutely have to reel in a difference-maker to pair with three-star commit Harrison Luke.

All eyes are now on Ta'Shawn Poole and Chance Gilbert—two elite prospects who still have Clemson in the mix. Both are set to be in Tiger Town for the massive official visit weekend from May 29 to 31, a stretch that could make or break the ceiling for this 2027 defensive class.

The Monday Deadline and a Familiar Face

Clemson is also watching Jarrell Chandler closely after he put the Tigers in his top four this week, but time is running out—Chandler will announce his decision this Monday, May 18. Even though Tom Allen tried to make a late push in Knoxville, most believe Chandler is still leaning hard toward his hometown Tennessee Volunteers.

That brings us to Seth Williams, the former Clemson commit who surprised everyone by putting the Tigers back in his top six after decommitting. Williams is also lined up for that huge May 29 visit weekend, setting the stage for a high-stakes reunion that Mike Reed and Nolan Turner are hoping ends with him coming home to the Paw.
