Matt Luke is widely seen as the top offensive line recruiter in the country, but even his best efforts could not stop the Buckeyes from taking a top target off the Tigers' wish list on Friday.
Jimmy Kalis, a 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive line prospect from Pittsburgh, officially announced his commitment to Ohio State on Rivals’ YouTube channel. This news is tough for Clemson fans, since Kalis had been a key part of the 2027 recruiting board for more than a year.
Kalis picked Ohio State over some of college football’s biggest programs, including Clemson, Miami, LSU, Texas, and Georgia. Even though the Tigers hosted him for the Spring Game on March 28 and Matt Luke visited him in Pennsylvania in January, staying closer to home was the deciding factor for the No. 9 player in Pennsylvania.
A Long Recruitment Journey Ends in Columbus
This was not a quick decision. Kalis traveled all over the country during his recruitment, making 44 visits before choosing a school. Clemson offered him in March 2025, hoping to secure an important player for the 2027 class early.
The Tigers did everything they could. Bringing him to campus for the final spring scrimmage at Memorial Stadium was meant to seal the deal, but the Buckeyes’ steady momentum since last spring was too strong to beat.
The Search for 2027 Offensive Linemen Continues
Losing a top tackle is always tough, but it helps to see the bigger picture. The Tigers do not have any offensive line commitments yet for the 2027 class, which is very different from the defensive side, where Jaden Wuerth and others have already committed.
There is good news, though. The 2026 class was a big success, with five of Clemson's six offensive line commits ranked in the top 40 at their positions. Dabo Swinney and Matt Luke are now focusing on new targets to make sure the 2027 class is just as strong. The search for the next great Tiger tackle is still going.
