It has to be different this year. Although Dabo Swinney made a big change at offensive coordinator by re-hiring Chad Morris, Tom Allen still remains as the Clemson Tigers' defensive coordinator. The former Indiana head coach is now three seasons removed from last leading the Hoosiers. In time, he might become an FBS head coach again. For now, Allen has settled in quite nicely over at Clemson.
How nicely? Well, we are entering untrodden territory for Allen at the helm of this Clemson defense. In fact, it should be noted that he has never had a Year 2 as a defensive coordinator before, or at least at the Division 1 level. Clemson broadcaster William Qualkinbush shared this unique coaching quirk as a part of Allen's lengthy resume. Outside of last year, Allen had always gone on to receive a promotion.
Allen came to Clemson last year after a great season coordinating the Penn State Nittany Lions' defense. During his lone year in State College, he helped guide Penn State to the national semifinals of the first 12-team College Football Playoff. Allen left Happy Valley to replace Wes Goodwin at the helm of Clemson's defense. He would also leave USF for IU, only to be promoted from within in 2017.

Continuity will be key in getting the most out of Tom Allen's defense
To put it simply, Allen is honestly overqualified to be Clemson's defensive coordinator. While Curt Cignetti's unprecedented success at Indiana has dwarfed everything Allen ever did in Bloomington, he did have a few high-end seasons leading the Hoosiers. He knows how to communicate effectively to an entire team. It should be a piece of cake for Allen to hone that even more so with this defense.
Given that the three biggest stars on this year's defense played for Allen last season, he can lean on them even more so now. Linebacker Sammy Brown and edge rusher Will Heldt have already been anointed leaders by Dabo Swinney as a part of their media obligations during ACC Media Days. While cornerback Ashton Hampton did not go, he could be the first Clemson player selected next spring.
Getting Allen back for at least one more season should move the needle for Clemson fans. While his first year with the team did not go swimmingly, he has a reputation for being a savvy defensive mind. With him having greater familiarity with his players, it should allow him to put them into advantageous positions to where they can play even faster. The less thinking Clemson does on defense, the better.
Overall, it is about establishing even more trust and building off that. Allen has potentially three first-round talents on defense in Brown, Hampton, and Heldt. The question now is the supporting cast will step up. Even though Andy Burburija is brand-new to this defense, he could emerge as the necessary fourth piece for the Tigers in the trenches to help this unit round into form. Allen is banking on all this.
Even if Allen has never gotten a Year 2 leading a defense before, the outlook coming in is promising.
