Buckle up, Tiger fans. Dabo Swinney and his crew are about to pull off one of the biggest recruiting steals we've seen in years.
With a commitment date set for Monday, May 18, Clemson has stormed to the front of the pack for one of the true gems of the 2027 class: four-star safety Jarrell Chandler.
Just five days ago, Chandler trimmed his list to Clemson, Tennessee, Miami, and Vanderbilt. For most of the spring, it looked like the Vols had this one in the bag. But then the orange wave rolled in, and everything changed. On Sunday, recruiting insider Chad Simmons put in a pick for Chandler to Clemson, and now all the momentum is on the Tigers’ side heading into decision day.
Leaving the Backyard
Let’s be clear: landing Chandler out of Knoxville would be a massive statement for Tom Allen and this Clemson staff. Chandler is the real deal—a four-star, top-100 national prospect, No. 6 safety, and the No. 4 player in Tennessee per the 2027 Rivals300.
Chandler grew up right in Knoxville, starring at Halls High, and the Vols did everything they could—three unofficial visits in March alone. It’s almost unheard of for a player like this to pass on the hometown team, but Clemson’s culture just hits on another level.
The Full-Court Press
Miami tried to make a move mid-week, with defensive coordinator Corey Heatherman pitching Chandler on playing linebacker. But the Clemson staff answered with a recruiting clinic.
Before Chandler even announced his timeline, Tom Allen, Thomas Allen, and Nolan Turner jumped on a plane to Knoxville. Their Monday morning pitch was all gas, no brakes, and it flipped the whole recruitment.
Tom Allen laid it all out, showing Chandler how his skills fit perfectly in Clemson’s defense at safety. Add in Dabo’s championship culture, and it’s easy to see why Chandler is listening. Now it’s simple: does he want to play linebacker for Miami, or be a difference-maker in the Tigers’ secondary?
A Loaded Secondary Board
While we wait on Chandler’s decision, one thing’s for sure: the future of Clemson’s secondary is as bright as Death Valley under the lights.
If recruiting gets wild, Mickey Conn and the defensive staff have stacked the safety board. Ta’Shawn Poole has Clemson in his top six, former commit Seth Williams is still in play, and four-star Chance Gilbert has the Tigers right near the top.
