Sound the alarm, college football: the sleeping giant in the Upstate is stirring, and 2026 is about to become the year Clemson reminds everyone why Death Valley is the most feared place in America. This is a revenge tour, and the Tigers are coming for respect.
Last season stung, no doubt about it. More Tigers heard their names called on draft day than we saw wins in the column, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that you can’t keep Dabo Swinney and Clemson down for long. Even the national media is waking up—FOX Sports just slotted the Tigers at No. 22 in their post-spring Top 25. That’s a sign the 'Best is the Standard' fire is burning bright again in Death Valley.
High Stakes and Homecoming
Chad Morris is back in orange, and you can feel the electricity crackling through the offense already. With Christopher Vizzina stepping up as the new field general and Gideon Davidson ready to torch defenses from the backfield, all the ingredients are there for a Tiger offense that’s about to roar back to life.
FOX’s RJ Young isn't shy about the pressure cooker surrounding the program, but he sees a resurgence on the horizon.
"Offensive coordinator Chad Morris is back. Defensive coordinator Tom Allen stayed. Quarterback Christopher Vizzina looks the part," Young said. "But head coach Dabo Swinney enters 2026 with his back against the wall. Clemson produced more NFL Draft picks (nine) than wins (seven) in 2025, a reality that makes this season about more than merely hanging around the top 25. Swinney knows it, which is why I think Clemson responds."
Scouting the Competition
While Clemson is busy stoking its own fire, the rest of the country is still chasing the usual suspects. Indiana sits atop the preseason mountain, with Ohio State, Georgia, Oregon, and Texas all jockeying for position. Let them have their moment—because the Tigers are coming.
The ACC is turning up the heat, too. Miami leads the league at No. 7, thanks in no small part to a headline-grabbing transfer that’s got everyone talking.
"Former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah broke his contract to join the Hurricanes after leading the ACC in passing yards (3,973) and passing touchdowns (34) while guiding the Blue Devils to a wildly improbable ACC championship on the strength of a 7-5 regular season and the most preposterous tiebreaker protocol in college football history," Young noted.
Clemson won’t have to wait long to prove it belongs. The Tigers open the season in Baton Rouge, squaring off with an LSU team ranked No. 8 and throwing NIL money around like confetti. It’s a heavyweight bout right out of the gate.
"Hoo, boy! If I told you 2026 LSU looks like 2025 Texas Tech with a little seasoning, you’d probably understand what I mean: the Bayou Bengals have decided money ain’t no problem," Young said.
Silencing the Skeptics
Of course, not everyone is ready to buy into the Clemson resurgence. CBS took a look at so-called 'overreactions' from ACC spring ball, and Austin Nivison is still pumping the brakes on the Morris-Vizzina pairing.
"Chad Morris is back to end all the offensive woes: The last time Morris helmed the offense at Clemson, the Tigers averaged more than 40 points per game in back-to-back seasons from 2012-13. That was also more than a decade ago -- and with all due respect to presumed starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina -- I'm not sure how well he compares to Tahj Boyd," Nivison said. "It's certainly plausible that the Tigers' offense improves after a disappointing 2025 campaign, but recent dips in recruiting may have capped that unit's ceiling."
As for the hype surrounding the Hurricanes, Nivison weighed in on whether Miami is a true title contender:
"The 'Canes are going to win the national championship: It's tough to blame any Miami fan who feels this way because this team should certainly be in the running. After reaching the title game last season, the Hurricanes probably upgraded at quarterback with Darian Mensah entering the fold. Elsewhere, Miami returns 10 starters with seven of those on the defensive side of the ball. The only question about this roster is the offensive line, which must replace significant talent and experience. If that unit holds up, this may not be an overreaction at all."
Let the talking heads doubt all they want. Here in Tigertown, we know exactly what happens when Coach Swinney’s got something to prove. The rest of the country better buckle up.
