Ahead of Tait Reynolds' first start for the Clemson Tigers, one injury update has broken in his favor, while another has not. Going up against Bill Belichick's North Carolina defense, the true freshman quarterback was potentially going to have to keep tabs on the Tar Heels' best edge-rusher in Melkart Abou Jaoude. Now, it is looking like he is not expected to play on Saturday during this ACC opener.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Saturday morning that Abou Jaoude is "dealing with a hand/wrist injury from the TCU game and had been listed as questionable" as of Thursday's ACC injury report. Reynolds will no longer have to deal with the ACC's reigning leader in sacks vs. North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. This should allow him a little bit more time to get comfortable inside the pocket.

On the other side of the coin, Reynolds' backup in Christopher Vizzina has been downgraded from probable to questionable coming into the game. Vizzina started the first two games of the year, but gave way to Reynolds after three series last week against Georgia Southern. Not only did he suffer an elbow injury to his non-throwing hand, but he had looked especially erratic under center in Week 2.

The State's Chapel Fowler reported that if Vizzina is unable to go in relief of Reynolds, it will be the fifth-year former walk-on Trent Pearman serving as Clemson's backup quarterback. Even though Reynolds has caught a big break with Abou Jaoude being listed as out, potentially not having Vizzina available to spell him could be problematic for Chad Morris' offense. It has struggled to score points.

With this game expected to go down to the wire, any slight edge a team can get over another is huge. Given that Abou Jaoude could have been more impactful coming in than Vizzina, the news of him being out seems to be a bigger deal than Clemson's backup quarterback from potentially giving it a go. Of course, Reynolds is completely unproven under center, which is why the backup is so key here.
Right now, the biggest winner of the news of Abou Jaoude is not even Reynolds, but the Clemson offensive line. Matt Luke's front five has been arguably the most disappointing unit for the Tigers through the first two weeks of the season. It was thought to be a strength for this offense, but has honestly been its biggest weakness. No Abou Jaoude could give them a fighting chance vs. UNC.
As for Vizzina being listed as questionable and Pearman potentially playing, this could all be a moot point if Reynolds lives up to the hype and delivers for Dabo Swinney right away. By putting his trust and faith into Reynolds, Swinney is taking a huge gamble at this stage of his coaching career at quarterback. Reynolds is still incredibly raw, but he has the necessary traits to win big for Clemson.
There is a non-zero chance that news of these injury updates could tip the scales in Clemson's favor.
