Sporting News put Clemson's legendary leader at No. 10 in their latest coach rankings

The national media is sleeping on our coach.

Here we go again. The national media forgets faster than a goldfish, pretending a couple of transition years can wipe away everything Dabo Swinney has built in Tiger Town. Even with all the recency bias swirling, they still can’t quite push our legendary leader out of college football’s top tier.

Let’s be honest. Dabo Swinney at the top of every coaching list has been as automatic as slapping Howard’s Rock before a run down the Hill. Two national titles, a mountain of Playoff runs, and a decade-long stranglehold on the ACC. That’s not just a resume, that’s a legacy. But somehow, the national narrative is drifting, and now the so-called experts are sliding Dabo down their lists. It’s flat-out baffling.

A Baffling Tumble for a Clemson Legend

In its latest head coaching hierarchy, Sporting News had the nerve to slot the face of Clemson football at No. 10 overall. Sure, staying in the top 10 is a nod to his place among the game’s elite, but putting a coach of Swinney’s caliber on the fringe of the top ten is flat-out disrespectful to Tiger Nation.

Sporting News’ Bill Bender highlighted the conflict national pundits face when evaluating Swinney's unmatched career achievements against a few transition years in Tiger Town.

“Swinney might be the toughest coach to rank on this list,” Bender wrote. “On one hand, he is one of just two active coaches with multiple national championships and likely will be the next one to reach 200 career victories. On the other, the Tigers are 26-14 the last three seasons – a .650 winning percentage that does not quite measure up after a disappointing 7-6 season in 2025. Swinney remains in the top 10 – at least for now.”

Fueling the 2026 Redemption Tour

That ominous 'at least for now' is all the bulletin board material Swinney and his hungry Tigers need inside the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex.

Critics love to point at a 26-14 stretch over the last three seasons and a frustrating 7-6 finish in 2025 as an excuse to drop his ranking. But let’s be real—a 'down' period for Clemson is a dream season for just about every other program in America. Swinney is still one of only two active head coaches who knows what it takes to hoist multiple national championship trophies, and he’s closing in fast on that legendary 200-win milestone.

The beautiful thing about college football is that empty summer rankings are completely meaningless once the ball is kicked off in Death Valley. Expectations remain sky-high for the orange and purple heading into the 2026 campaign. Clemson is widely expected to be a premier ACC championship contender and a team fully capable of smashing its way back into the expanded College Football Playoff field.

When the Tigers storm back to national prominence and silence the doubters in the months ahead, Swinney’s place among the absolute elite won’t be up for debate any longer.
