Sammy Brown doesn’t exactly blend into his surroundings — and that’s especially true heading into a bowl game in New York City.

The linebacker, who admitted he’s more comfortable running through the woods than navigating skyscrapers, is embracing both the stage and the responsibility that comes with it.

“This will be my first time in New York,” Brown said. “I’m really going to try to take it all in and see what life is like up north in the big city.”

On the field, Brown’s role has expanded with Wade Woodaz sidelined, pushing him into a more vocal leadership position within Clemson’s defense.

“It’s been really good for me to step up into the leadership role,” Brown said. “Helping some of the other guys out in the back room and just helping them come along.”

Brown has been particularly impressed by the growth of younger defenders during bowl practices, singling out several linemen who have taken advantage of the extra reps.

“Mayo and Champ have really been coming along,” Brown said. “Especially Champ — it’s been really cool to see him step up.”

As Clemson prepares for Penn State, Brown said the film shows an offense that’s far more dangerous than it might appear on paper.

“They’re impressive,” Brown said. “They’re really committed to the run, and I think they’re going to do that in the bowl game.”

Still, Brown views the Pinstripe Bowl as both an opportunity and a proving ground — for himself and for the younger Tigers now stepping into the spotlight.

“I’m really confident in a lot of those guys,” Brown said.
