Sam Walker had seen enough. It only took him one day to commit to Georgia Tech after seeing Clemson get pushed around by the Miami Hurricanes in person. The four-star interior offensive lineman may hail from the Peach State over in Carrollton. He may want to get coached up by Brent Key anyway. However, losing Walker is what happens when you experience a blowout loss at home.
With Georgia Tech being arguably the worst team in the ACC right now, what does this say about Clemson's recruiting efforts under Dabo Swinney? In the first week of October, Clemson has one player committed to be part of their 2028 class. That would be four-star Trace Hawkins from Calhoun, Ga. Clemson had a big opportunity to gain some momentum in recruitment on Saturday, and blew it.
Although this could be somewhat similar to four-star legacy linebacker Jay Schell picking Oklahoma over Clemson to play for a head coach who favors his position group, Brent Venables, it is not like the Ramblin' Wreck of Georgia Tech has been anything special this year. Key's job is safe, regardless of what happens this year. However, Walker being more than willing to sign up for that mess is so telling.

Dabo Swinney must evolve Clemson's sales pitch after missing out again
Walker committing to Georgia Tech is not the end of the world. How much of an impact is an interior offensive lineman really going to have? He hails from the extreme western part of the state, not far from Key's neck of the woods in his native Alabama. Admittedly, four-star players from Georgia will want to play for the Yellow Jackets or the Bulldogs more often than not, with a few key exceptions.
To be quite frank, Clemson should be an exception. The Tigers are regularly one of the better FBS programs from outside of Georgia that recruit in the Peach State with great conviction. Much of the northeast region of the state is split between Clemson and Georgia fans. Georgia also gets poached heavily by Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, and Tennessee out of high school.
What Walker committing to Georgia Tech really means is that the product that Swinney and his staff are selling on the recruiting trail is no longer as enticing as it once was. Yes, there are reasons why Walker may prefer Georgia Tech over Clemson. That does not change the fact that these are bitter ACC rivals separated by some 75 miles. With DeAndre Hopkins part of that staff, this one really hurts.
Overall, Clemson has to look at itself in the mirror and ask what the Tigers are doing so wrong in recruiting. In time, the Tigers will get more than just one player to sign up for the cause in 2028. However, Swinney cannot afford to lose any more ground in recruitment, especially when it comes keeping its 2027 class together. There are wins to be had later on, but the Miami loss carries weight.
How Clemson responds after its bye week will be telling to the type of class it could build for 2028.
