These days, the real battles in college football are fought long before the first snap—right on the recruiting trail. And for our Tigers, this summer is shaping up to be a make-or-break moment. Starting May 29, The Valley is going to be buzzing with a flood of official visitors, and you better believe Dabo Swinney is treating this stretch like a playoff run. In today’s world, building a championship roster means nailing every evaluation and every pitch. As the staff gets ready to roll out the orange carpet, there are a few 2027 studs we absolutely have to keep in Tiger Town.

Dabo’s made it clear from day one: Clemson football is built on real relationships with high school kids, not just chasing quick fixes from the portal.

“Relationships between the coaching staff and high school players are forging,” Swinney noted as the summer heat began to rise. “Difference makers get you back to the playoffs. You cannot fail in recruiting and then overload in transfer portal.”

THE CROWN JEWEL: GARY WALKER AND THE BACKFIELD NEED

After losing out on top-10 back Andrew Beard to Florida, the heat is on for C.J. Spiller to land a game-changer in the backfield. Enter Gary Walker—the four-star burner from Georgia who averaged almost nine yards a pop last season. He’s the guy at the very top of Clemson’s wish list for the May 29-31 weekend, and every Tiger fan knows it.

Walker’s already clicked with our future QB, Kharim Hughley. Hughley just punched his ticket to the Elite 11 Finals, and his fire fits right in with Clemson’s championship DNA.

“It was special… I expected the invite… I came in there with a mindset, I'm going to win it, so I went in there and did my job,” Hughley said of his national performance. Hughley is already fully bought into the high-tempo vision being deployed by co-offensive coordinator Chad Morris, adding, “He's definitely an intense guy. He's very upbeat... I love his fast pace. I'm excited for the season.”

Walker’s the perfect lightning to Hughley’s thunder, and it sounds like he’s just as fired up about Clemson as we are about him heading into his visit.

“Clemson is high for me,” Walker revealed. “Relationship is continuing to develop with the staff. I am excited about summer training with my trainer, Creekside's Summer Camp, and continuing to sharpen my craft.”

For the blue-chip back, the decision will ultimately come down to a program's foundational identity. “I hope to receive more insight into the Clemson way,” Walker said. “It remains important to me for a program to have integrity, a positive culture, and great relationships. I previously posted my OVs on Twitter, and I hope to have a decision prior to the season.”

DEFENSIVE TRENCHES: KEEPING THE ‘WAR DADDIES’ HOME

If you want to own the ACC, you have to win in the trenches. That’s why Dabo’s made it clear: keeping in-state monster Seth Tillman home is a must. The Rock Hill star has Clemson in his final five, and he’s locked in for an official visit on June 12.

If the Tigers can reel in Tillman, that’s a top-150 anchor to plug in next to linebacker commit Bryce Kish. And don’t forget, the staff is going all-in on four-star edge rusher Andrew Rogers out of North Carolina, who’ll be on campus that same weekend.

Locking down these defensive studs keeps Clemson’s tradition of dominant fronts alive and well—just like Vic Burley, who said it best this spring: he’s been slow-cooking, and now it’s his time to eat.

THE SECONDARY RESET: NAVIGATING THE VISITOR BOARD

Things just got tighter in the secondary after four-star corner Bryce Williams bailed on his Clemson visit for Oklahoma. Now it’s on Mike Reed to lock down the rest of the board when the next wave of top DBs hits campus May 29.

Four-star corners Jayden Aparicio-Bailey and Bryant Robinson are locked in for that huge May weekend. The staff’s also hoping to win back former safety commit Seth Williams, plus impress big-time receiver targets Jamarin Simmons and Tae Walden Jr.

THE BOTTOM LINE: VALUE OVER VALUATIONS

Other schools might be throwing around big money, but Dabo’s sticking to the culture and values that brought two national titles to Clemson.

“We don’t have the same NIL budget as some places have... But guess what? We never have,” Swinney said with conviction. “But you know what we do have? We have enough. We got enough. We just have to be good with what we have. At Clemson, we always have to have a chip on our shoulder. It’s just about what you do. The work you do, and you start over every year. We’re a developmental team.”

The stage is set. This summer’s official visits will show which recruits are ready to buy in and chase greatness in orange and white.
