Clemson's running back Phil Mafah has torn up opposing defenses through the first three games of the season, but his performance on the field is rivaled only by his performance in the classroom.

The National Football Foundation named Mafah one of the 203 semifinalists for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy. The honor is awarded to the "absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation," which encompasses the player's success and leadership in the class, as well as the football field.

Mafah earned his degree in management last spring and is pursuing his master's degree. On the football field, he's recorded 284 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 8.6 yards per carry. If Mafah were to win, he would be the second Tiger to earn the award. The first was Christian Wilkins in 2018.

The William V. Campbell trophy is one of the only awards that rewards its finalists, providing each a postgraduate scholarship to the tune of $18,000. The winner's amount will increase to $25,000 once he's revealed. The NFF will announce the finalists on Oct. 23, and the award presentation will take place in Las Vegas on Dec. 10.
