Happy Birthday to The Paw!

Today Clemson Athletics is celebrating the birthday of the Tigers' famous logo, The Paw.

The university is encouraging everyone to wear their favorite Paw merchandise today.

The Paw was unveiled to the public on July 21, 1970. New head coach Hootie Ingram encouraged the school to create a new logo for the athletics programs.

Bob Bradley, who was the sports information director for the Tigers at the time, said athletics director Frank Howard wasn’t impressed at first when the logo was revealed to the administration. His tune changed when he saw it on the helmet.

"That helmet made a big impact on Coach Howard. He was so impressed, he wanted to bring that helmet back to Clemson and show everyone."

Other news and notes from around Clemson athletics:

Clemson Football received a new verbal commitment from Top-60 prospect Bryce Davis yesterday. Davis’s commitment boosted Clemson’s Class of 2025 up to 11th in the 247Sports Class Rankings.

The Tigers have the 5th best average player rating in the nation. Clemson has the fewest commitments (14) of any team ranked in the Top 20 except for Florida State (12), which is ranked 18th.

Davis was Clemson’s first 2025 verbal commitment since offensive lineman Rowan Byrne committed on June 6th. Clemson’s 2025 class is expected to be smaller than many other classes this year but they are still recruiting.

Their biggest target remaining is Jordan Young, a safety prospect from the Charlotte area. They are also recruiting Dillon Alfred, a wide receiver who de-committed from Ole Miss last month.

Clemson Baseball has added another transfer pitcher. Michael Gillen is transferring to the Tigers from the Seton Hall Pirates. He is a right-handed pitcher with a 1.51 ERA over two seasons.

He is the second transfer taken by the Tigers to reinforce the pitching staff in the past week.
