National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Yesterday was National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and Clemson recognized several of their female athletes from all their sports.

In the next academic year, Clemson will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the introduction of women’s sports. Clemson became coeducational in 1955 and introduced women’s sports twenty years after that.

The first women’s Tigers team was the Basketball program. Tonight Clemson takes on Miami in a quest to extend their winning streak to four games.

In the years since, Clemson has introduced ten other sports programs for women. Three of those programs have come in the past five seasons. Gymnastics is in its first year of competition and is 3-1 so far. Their next match is in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Clemson Women’s Lacrosse is preparing to start their second season. They are opening a new stadium on Saturday against the Davidson Wildcats.

Softball is beginning year five tonight in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. They will play five games over the next four days. After that, they will travel to Mexico for another tournament before returning to McWhorter Stadium to host the Clemson Classic.

After their inaugural season was cut short due to COVID-19, they have steadily improved and have qualified for the NCAA Tournament the past three seasons. They have won their regional the past two seasons.

Let there be smoke

Clemson Baseball is also closing in on the start of their 2024 season as well. One of the signs that the season is right around the corner is when the Cajun Café begins stocking its shelves.

The Tigers' first pitch is next Friday, February 16th at home against the Xavier Musketeers.
