Clemson Softball looks to remain undefeated against the South Carolina Gamecocks
By John Chancey
Clemson Softball will take on their archrivals, the South Carolina Gamecocks, on Wednesday before starting a 3-game road series against the Virginia Cavaliers.
The Tigers are 21-6 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They completed a 3-game sweep of the North Carolina Tar Heels at McWhorter Stadium this past weekend. Before that, they defeated Gardner-Webb in mid-week action.
Regan Spencer got a solo shutout on the mound for the Tigers on Friday. Millie Thompson got the start and the win on Saturday, while Spencer and Brooke McCubbin paired up for the Tigers’ run-rule victory on Sunday.
Spencer was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week. She had a 0.00 ERA through three total appearances and
Clemson got production throughout the lineup during the series against UNC, but Maddie Moore in particular was in the zone. She tallied five hits, six RBIs, and four runs scored.
The Tigers moved up to 11th in the rankings following their 4-0 week.
One of the storylines for the rivalry match-up against the Gamecocks will be the availability of Valerie Cagle. Cagle missed time this past weekend due to an illness. We might not know if she is active until the game begins Wednesday evening.
South Carolina is 21-7 overall and 0-3 in the SEC. They went into the weekend ranked 23rd before dropping both games of a doubleheader to NC State and Northwestern respectively. They are ranked 25th this week.
Clemson is undefeated against their in-state rivals. They are 5-0 vs. the Gamecocks since launching the program in 2020.
Virginia is 18-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference after a series against Boston College, North Carolina and Syracuse. The Cavaliers went 1-2 against UNC in Chapel Hill, as a point of reference.
The first pitch against the Gamecocks will be at 6:00 PM Wednesday at McWhorter Stadium.
