Does Pitt have a future star in its backfield? ACC QB Power Rankings, week four
The quarterback play in the ACC has a huge range of performances, ranging from the consistent and elite production of Cam Ward to the amazing downfall of DJ Uiagalelei and everything in between. Last week was no different.
Five teams were on a bye in week three, with Louisville, Clemson, SMU, Syracuse, and Stanford taking a break. The rest of the conference went 8-4, with the only Power Four win coming from Pittsburgh's 38-34 win over West Virginia, led by Eli Holstein's 301 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Holstein has played phenomenally through his first three games, recording 300-plus yards in each contest and at least three touchdowns. What's more impressive is he's doing all of this as a redshirt freshman transfer from Alabama. But as you'll see, not every player transfer pans out.
Rank | QB | School | Previous Rank |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Cam Ward | Miami | 1 |
2 | Kyle McCord | Syracuse | 2 |
3 | Haynes King | Georgia Tech | 3 |
4 | Kyron Drones | Virginia Tech | 4 |
5 | CJ Bailey | NC State | Not Ranked |
6 | Cade Clubnik | Clemson | 6 |
7 | Eli Holstein | Pitt | 10 |
8 | Maalik Murphy | Duke | 8 |
9 | Anthony Colandrea | Virginia | 9 |
10 | Conner Harrell/Jacolby Criswell | North Carolina | 7 |
11 | Fernando Mendoza | Cal | 16 |
12 | Hank Bachmeier | Wake Forest | 13 |
13 | Tyler Shough | Louisville | 12 |
14 | Thomas Castellanos | Boston College | 15 |
15 | Ashton Daniels | Stanford | 17 |
16 | Kevin Jennings | SMU | 14 |
17 | DJ Uiagalelei | Florida State | 11 |
Uiagalelei has been a disaster at Florida State. As you can see, he's finally hit the floor. The former five-star prospect boasts a 56.6 completion percentage with 666 yards passing and negative 14 yards rushing. He has one passing touchdown and a 43.1 adjusted QB rating. How he's still the starter for the Seminoles shows either the lack of talent at QB or total incompetence from Mike Norvell and his staff.
FSU isn't the only program in the ACC having QB troubles at the moment, although for a much different reason. NC State is going into its first conference game of the season with its backup QB, CJ Bailey. There's not much to base his ranking on, so he's going where Grayson McCall would've gone, however fair that may be. Regardless, we'll find out just how good he is with his collegiate start against Clemson's punishing defense.
