Clemson Football had some good freshmen who redshirted because of injury or illness. Here are five who could make an impact in 2024.

Jay Haynes

Position: Running back

Hometown: Roanoke, Alabama

High School: Handley High School

247Sports Composite Rating: 3-star

Height: 5”-11”

Weight: 185 pounds

Reason for redshirt: Injury

Similar to defensive tackle, there was no doubt who would man the running back position for the Tigers in 2023. Will Shipley and Phil Mafah would (and did) get most of the carries.

Clemson did work other players in as circumstances allowed. When Haynes got his opportunity against Charleston Southern, he didn’t disappoint. He had a touchdown run and a touchdown reception.

Haynes demonstrated elite speed and agility, which has fans very excited for his return this season. Return is the correct word because we didn’t see much of Haynes after the CSU game.

Haynes was injured and unavailable for most of the rest of the 2023 campaign. He entered last season at 185 pounds, which is not much for a running back. The Tigers typically prefer to have their backs at 200 pounds or more.

Haynes will be one of the most anticipated names to look for when Clemson releases their Big Weigh-In at the beginning of fall camp. With Shipley’s exit to the NFL, there will be opportunities if he stays healthy.

Jarvis Green and walk-on Peyton Streko are also dark horses to get snaps at running back this year.
