Spring practice began this week for Clemson Football. Here are three questions I have about the quarterback room for 2024 that are on my mind this spring.

Can Cade Klubnik fulfill his potential?

Clemson hit on Deshaun Watson as a 4-star quarterback and he led them to a national championship. They secured Trevor Lawrence as a 5-star and he did the same. The expectation was that 5-star DJ Uiagalelei would do the same, but that didn’t happen.

Tiger fans were excited to see if Cade Klubnik could return Clemson to national prominence but it took one game in Durham on Labor Day Monday to make it painfully clear that wasn’t going to happen.

Klubnik would have to take a massive step to achieve in the same vein as Watson or Lawrence. That isn’t happening. What could happen, however, is that Klubnik could smooth out the rough edges enough that he doesn’t have to be the hero.

When Clemson lost to Alabama in the 2015 Natty, they weren’t beaten by an all-world quarterback. Jay Coker simply did his job and put the Crimson Tide in a position where their very talented roster could elevate the program to a championship.

Clemson’s full roster isn’t the NFL-ready prospect list that Alabama was in 2015, but that isn’t the point. The point is that the Tigers have the weapons to be successful at most places on the roster if Klubnik can be consistent, make good decisions, and minimize turnovers.

We’ve been waiting for the game to slow down for Klubnik. If it does, the Tiger offense might not set the world on fire, but in conjunction with the defense they could put Clemson in position to win the ACC and grab a playoff berth.
