PFF names Clemson legend Deshaun Watson as an NFL player with the "most at stake" in 2026

Deshaun Watson, the pride of Clemson, is right back in the fire. After battling through injuries and setbacks that would have broken lesser men, the Tiger legend now faces the biggest moment of his NFL journey. No more hiding. It’s all on the line.

Pro Football Focus just put it in black and white: nobody in the NFL has more riding on this season than Deshaun Watson. After clawing his way back from a brutal rehab that wiped out his 2025, the three-time Pro Bowler is finally healthy and staring down a make-or-break year in Cleveland. The Dawg Pound is watching, but so is every Tiger back home.

The Sophomore Threat and the Lead in OTAs

The Browns didn’t hit the reset button at quarterback, but they did bring in Todd Monken to overhaul a passing attack that was flat-out awful last year. For Watson, this isn’t just about legacy—it’s about holding onto his job with Shedeur Sanders, the hotshot sophomore, breathing down his neck.

But if you think Deshaun is backing down, think again. Early word out of Cleveland says the Clemson legend is taking charge. He grabbed the lead in minicamp and hasn’t let go, keeping Sanders in his rearview through OTAs, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

But as PFF’s Bradley Locker notes, the leash will be incredibly short once the regular-season games actually kick off:

“The Browns are granting Watson a chance to be the team’s QB1 in 2026, but the 30-year-old may not have many further opportunities if he’s poor yet again,” Locker wrote.

The $230 Million Contract Countdown

You can’t talk about Watson in Cleveland without mentioning the mountain of expectations. The Browns went all-in back in 2022, sending three first-rounders to Houston and handing Deshaun a jaw-dropping, fully guaranteed $230 million deal. That’s the kind of bet you make on a Tiger.

So far, that gamble hasn’t come close to paying off.

When Watson has suited up for the Browns, he hasn’t looked like the same guy who lit up Death Valley or Houston. In 19 games, he’s thrown for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 picks, completing just over 61 percent of his passes. His PFF grade since 2022? A rough 41st out of 48. That’s not the Tiger standard.

The Ultimate Crossroads

With his massive contract running out after 2026, Watson is fighting for his football future. If he rises to the challenge under Monken and keeps Sanders on the bench, he can reclaim his spot among the NFL’s elite. If not, this could be the last stand for one of Clemson’s greatest.

The arm, the legs, the heart that made him a champion in Tigertown—they’re all still there. Now it’s time for Deshaun to show the world, one more time, what a Tiger can do.
