College football recruiting always has its ups and downs. Still, this loss hurts more than most.
Clemson had big plans for its official visit weekend from May 29-31, with four-star cornerback Kei’Shjuan Telfair expected to lead the group. But the standout from Euclid, Ohio, decided he was ready to make his choice. On Sunday, Telfair ended his recruitment by committing to Penn State, leaving both the Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes out of the running.
A Long-Time Target Chooses Elsewhere
The Tigers have been interested in Telfair for a long time. He first visited Death Valley for the season opener against LSU, and Clemson offered him a spot back in September. At 6-foot-0, he is considered one of the smoothest defensive backs in the country.
Telfair is more than just another recruit—he’s a top talent. He is ranked No. 93 overall in the Composite Rankings and is the No. 12 cornerback in the 2027 class. Clemson made him a priority as they look to strengthen their "DBU" pipeline.
Why the Nittany Lions?
Why Did He Pick Penn State? Even with the lure of the ACC and the unique culture of Tigertown, Telfair ultimately chose to stay closer to home in the Big Ten. Penn State’s long-standing relationship with the Ohio product proved to be the difference-maker, despite the Tigers getting him on campus early and building a strong rapport.
What Comes Next for the Tigers?
Losing a top-100 player to a team like Penn State is tough, especially since Telfair was supposed to visit Clemson soon. The Tigers still have a strong list of prospects for 2027, but missing out on someone with Telfair’s size and skills means the coaches will need to adjust quickly to keep the secondary strong.
The "Big Visit" weekend in May will still feature plenty of top recruits, but it’s clear that one key player has chosen a different path.
