When Dabo Swinney and Chad Morris get rolling on the recruiting trail, it’s like Death Valley on a Saturday night—electric, relentless, and suddenly the house is packed before you know it.
After a red-hot run that brought more four-star firepower to Wide Receiver U, the dominoes are starting to fall. On Wednesday morning, Tiger Illustrated’s Paul Strelow broke the news that two prized Tennessee blue-chippers—wideout Lawrence Britt and do-it-all athlete Tae Walden Jr.—have pulled the plug on their much-anticipated trips to Tigertown.
These two cancellations make it crystal clear how the staff is building this class. With electric four-star playmaker Jamarin Simmons and hometown hero Trey Wimbley already locked in, plus a tidal wave of Clemson momentum for three-star burner Julian Cromartie, the Tigers’ wish list at receiver is set in stone.
Tae Walden Jr.: Exploding on the National Radar
Missing out on Walden’s visit stings a bit, but that’s the price you pay when you land your top dog in Jamarin Simmons. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound dynamo from Collierville High is a consensus four-star, ranked No. 63 in the nation and the No. 3 athlete in America. That’s the kind of talent that changes a recruiting board in a hurry.
Walden has put together an absolutely dominant two-year varsity stretch on both sides of the ball:
- Offense: 57 receptions, 1,219 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns.
- Defense: 35 tackles, 24 pass deflections, and 7 interceptions.
Clemson jumped into the mix for Walden during March’s Elite Retreat, with Chad Morris painting a picture of him lighting up the scoreboard in orange. Walden had the Tigers high on his list, but with the receiver room filling up fast, he’s shifting gears and turning his attention to other national heavyweights:
- Auburn: May 29
- Georgia: June 12
- Ole Miss: June 16
- Oregon: June 19
Lawrence Britt: The Offensive Swiss Army Knife
Lawrence Britt, another four-star gamebreaker, is also off the guest list for the big recruiting bash. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Memphis product from Lausanne Collegiate is ranked No. 233 nationally by 247Sports and checks in as the No. 37 receiver in the country according to Rivals.
For the past three years, Britt has been a human highlight reel, torching defenses from the backfield and out wide and piling up video game numbers:
- Receiving: 75 receptions, 1,148 yards, and 19 touchdowns.
- Rushing: 94 carries, 725 yards, and 14 touchdowns.
Clemson jumped into the Britt sweepstakes at the Elite Retreat and still managed to break into his top six, even as a late arrival. Now, with the Tigers focusing elsewhere, Britt looks bound for Missouri, where the home-state Tigers have rolled out the red carpet for him with an eye-popping 10 visits since March 2025.
Britt’s finalized official summer tour includes:
- Missouri: June 5
- Florida: June 11
- Texas Tech: June 19
The Wide Receiver Landscape
Sure, losing two blue-chip studs shakes up the May 29–31 mega-weekend, but let’s be real—the sky isn’t falling in Tiger Town.
The staff’s early read and full-court press for Jamarin Simmons, who got his offer way back in June 2025, set the tone for this whole cycle. With Wimbley locked in and Cromartie heating up, the future of Clemson’s offense looks flat-out scary. Coach Swinney can afford to be picky, because this class is still one of the nation’s best—no question about it.
