Doug Kingsmore Stadium was buzzing under the Friday night lights, but it was Boston College that jumped out swinging, landing the first punches and putting our Tigers on their heels. The Eagles mixed just enough small ball with some big swings to steal the opener, 8-4, and leave the Clemson faithful hungry for a response.
Give the Tigers credit—they never stopped fighting—but that early six-run gut punch from BC had us playing uphill all night. Dane Moehler and the defense were forced into scramble mode from the jump, and the hole was just too deep to climb out of this time.
The Scoring Breakdown
- BC wasted no time landing the first blow—Nick Wang sent a solo shot out in the first, and the Eagles kept swinging in the second with a three-run rally fueled by back-to-back RBI doubles. The Tigers were on their heels early.
- Tiger Life: Clemson clawed back in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs on a crucial two-out error to cut the lead to 4-2.
- The Response: BC’s Kyle Wolff didn’t let the momentum shift for long, launching a two-run homer in the third to push the lead to 6-2.
- The Jarrell Blast: In the fifth, Jacob Jarrell reminded the league why he’s one of the most dangerous bats in the ACC, crushing his 17th home run of the year—a two-run bomb that made it 6-4.
- The Ninth Inning Dagger: The Eagles put the game on ice in the final frame with a Ty Mainolfi RBI single and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Luke Gallo.
Silver Linings & Return of the Captain
Still, there were plenty of reasons for Tiger fans to keep their heads high after this one:
- The Streak Lives: Nate Savoie lined a single in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. He remains the most consistent weapon in Erik Bakich's arsenal.
- Purify’s Return: As Coach Bakich hoped, Jarren Purify made his return to the starting lineup. While he struggled with the "inside heat" (striking out twice against Colarusso), just having his glove and leadership back at second base is a massive mental boost for this squad.
- The Power of Jarrell: Jacob Jarrell continues his torrid pace. 17 homers in a single season is an elite mark, and he’s clearly seeing the ball like a beach ball right now.
Pitching Notes
Give credit where it’s due—BC’s A.J. Colarusso was locked in, piling up a season-high eight strikeouts over six innings and keeping the Tigers off balance. Cesar Gonzalez came in for the final three and slammed the door, but you can bet the Tigers will be ready to bounce back.
