It keeps happening! Hours before kickoff, the betting line moved even more so in Clemson's direction. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Clemson will now be laying 2.5 points at Cal on a super late Friday night kick. The moneylines have moved as well with Clemson at -126 and Cal at +104. This means you would need to wager $126 on Clemson to win $100, while a $100 bet on Cal would pocket you $104.
Interestingly, the projected point total for this game has gone up an additional point to 51.5. When the betting odds first came out for this game, the over/under was set at 49.5. After not getting very much movement in the first three games of the year, Clemson went from being a 1.5-point road underdog, to being a 2.5-point road favorite. Clemson is giving four more points than it did earlier in the week!
For a team that looked so disjointed for most of this season, this Clemson love is getting out of hand.
Clemson being an even bigger favorite over Cal seems rather ominous
Admittedly, there may be multiple factors working in Clemson's favor here. They have the far more experienced head coach in Dabo Swinney. While Tosh Lupoi could be great one day, this is only his first season leading his alma mater. Right now, he is spending too much time trying to get the student body to show up to Clemson versus Cal. We would not be having this issue if the game was at home.
Clearly, there are not enough Cal bettors out there to get enough money on both sides of the line. This is why it moved so late up until kickoff. Frankly, this drastic change in direction has honestly made it a stayaway game for Clemson bettors. These two teams are evenly matched, but only one can come out of Berkeley with a victory. Right now, Cal looks to be a dangerous play in some aspects.
With this being Clemson's first game at Berkeley to date, there is so much unknown heading into this ACC contest. This will be the second time in this young season for Clemson where the Tigers will be playing on the road in an environment they have been in before. Do we even care to remember what happened the last time that this was the case? Clemson had no answers for LSU over in Baton Rouge.
While Cal is not as good as LSU, all three teams have the same 2-1 record. The only difference is LSU's loss was to Ole Miss, Cal's was to UCLA, and Clemson's was obviously to LSU. Something has to give in this game. The winner will enter October with a great deal of confidence, while the loser will be wondering if there is even a pathway for them to get to Charlotte. This betting line is out of control!
Either way, we can expect this game to go down to the wire into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
