Just eight minutes and 10 points into the game between the Clemson Tigers and Syracuse Orange, the world looked like it was ending, according to Tiger fans.
Before anybody could blink, much less catch their breath, the Orange was up 10-0 after marching down the field for a touchdown, pulling off a flawless onside kick, and storming right back down for a field goal.
Immediately, Clemson fans were hitting the panic button as it became rapidly apparent that the Tigers could start the season with a 1-3 overall record and two losses to unranked opponents.
Of course, those same people in panic mode were also calling for Swinney’s time in Clemson to come to an end, despite the two National Championships he had brought to the program.

I was not expecting Syracuse to run all over Clemson.

This is troubling.
Clemson is barely a top half of the ACC team right now.

Clemson looked like they just rolled out of bed as Syracuse marched down the field to score, plus a successful onside kick to go up by double digits.

The offense bounced back nicely with a 4th down conversion to set up a moon-ball score.
10-7, End of 1st.
Sure, a 1-3 record isn’t the end-all, be-all of a college football program. Florida State finished last season with a 2-10 overall record, just to come back and start the year with a 2-0 record and a win over then-No. 8 Alabama.
However, despite the national titles, the conference domination, and the repeated success of Clemson, people were ready for Swinney’s tenure to end.

Less than a quarter into the game, Death Valley was silent, and even the commentators were spooked by the eeriness that was readily apparent throughout the stadium.
Of course, once the Tigers finally got the ball in their hands on the offensive end, they marched down the field, scored a touchdown to make it a one-possession game, and Death Valley came back to life.
However, the rapid shift in energy made it painfully obvious how quickly Swinney’s time in Clemson could be looked at negatively and how quickly the Tiger fans could give up on their team.
