When Indiana pursued Brad Brownell, Clemson countered with security no other school could match. In April, Brownell signed a six-year, $27.5 million contract that doesn’t just pay him handsomely — it also provides a rare career safety net.
The deal includes a clause allowing him to transition into a special assistant role to the athletic director if and when he steps away from coaching.
“It’s something we talked about when the Indiana thing was going on,” Brownell said. “That was something I knew Clemson could offer me that another school could not.”
It’s a forward-thinking approach from Clemson’s administration and one more reason Brownell chose to stay put. With stability off the court and momentum on it, he now has the runway to elevate the program into a consistent national power.
