Is there anyone more beloved than Hunter Renfrow when it comes to former Clemson football players? Obviously there are guys who are appreciated to the same degree, but Renfrow was the hero of the 2017 national title game against Alabama when he caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson with one second left and won two championships in three years.
Renfrow was a big part of Clemson's rise to the top of the sport and fans religiously followed his journey to the NFL and have been rooting him on ever since.
So when news broke of Renfrow's sudden retirement from the NFL at the age of 29 on Wednesday, everyone was a bit shocked -- including Renfrow himself.
Just when I thought about making a comeback I get hit with this bombshell…… guess I shouldn’t have started working out again 2 months ago lol https://t.co/JTEex3MKKa

The humor there is evident as he shot down a rumor with one tweet.
"Just when I thought about making a comeback, I get hit with this bombshell," Renfrow joked on X, also stating that he's been working out for a couple of months to earn a spot with a team willing to take a chance on a guy who didn't play anywhere in 2024.
If you read the replies to his tweet, you'll see that he's still highly-regarded in NFL circles as fans of a number of teams lobbied for their organization to pick him up.
Renfrow has had an interesting NFL career after being selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders. He had over 600 yards receiving in each of his first two seasons before a career-year in 2021 where he caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. After that, however, he fell off a bit thanks to an injury he suffered in 2022 that limited him to 10 games. He was never quite the same after that and didn't have a home in 2024 after being released from the Raiders after the 2023 campaign.
But it looks like he's trying to make a comeback and I know for a fact that there are teams out there who would love a reliable slot receiver like Renfrow who has been known as a route technician.
Hopefully we'll see him taking the field on Sundays next year despite him "retiring" today.
